India automobile retail sales grow 26 percent in July 2026

Total automobile retail sales in India reached 25.91 lakh units in July 2026, marking a 25.89 percent increase compared to the same month last year. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations reported that passenger vehicle sales rose by 19.13 percent, while electric vehicle sales hit a record high of 3.27 lakh units, representing 12.7 percent of total retail volume.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations reported that total retail sales for automobiles in India reached 25,91,138 units in July 2026. This figure represents a 25.89 percent increase over the 20,58,325 units sold during the same period in 2025. Passenger vehicle sales accounted for 4,16,555 units, while two-wheeler sales reached 18,18,289 units. Additionally, the industry recorded 1,33,000 three-wheeler sales and 99,666 commercial vehicle sales.

The growth in retail sales is attributed to the rationalisation of GST rates and improved access to vehicle financing. Electric vehicle adoption also reached a new milestone, with 3,27,901 units sold in July, marking the highest monthly volume in history. This surge in electric vehicle demand increased the overall market penetration to approximately 12.7 percent, compared to 9.6 percent recorded in the previous year.
