India increases LPG imports from the United States to 67 percent

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri stated that India has increased its LPG imports from the United States to 67 percent of its total requirements. This development represents a major shift in the country's energy procurement strategy, as initial plans at the start of the year aimed for only 10 percent of imports to come from the US. The minister clarified that the decision to increase reliance on American supplies was not driven by geopolitical tensions or the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

India is currently the world's third-largest energy consumer and importer, as well as the fourth-largest refiner. The government faced questions regarding the necessity of sourcing gas from the United States given the availability of suppliers closer to India. Officials indicated that the strategy was adjusted in response to rapidly changing global conditions over the past few months to ensure energy security.
