Japanese student receives compensation after wrongful detention in Bengaluru

Hirotoshi Tanaka, a Japanese national, arrived in Bengaluru in 2019 to enroll in a private English language academy. Following frequent class cancellations and disputes with the academy management, Tanaka became involved in a conflict that resulted in his detention. He spent nineteen days in custody before facing deportation proceedings. In a bid to delay his departure and continue his legal fight, Tanaka stole a chair from a police station to ensure his arrest.

The incident led to a seven-year legal struggle involving allegations of bribery and misconduct by local authorities. The Human Rights Commission eventually intervened and ruled in favor of the student, granting him compensation for his nineteen days of unjust custody. The case highlights the legal and immigration challenges faced by the student during his time in India.
