Supreme Court acquits Odisha man after 22 years of wrongful imprisonment

Arjun Jani was released from prison after the Supreme Court of India overturned his murder conviction and the subsequent judgment of the Odisha High Court. The Supreme Court bench determined that the original trial court had failed to conduct a proper analysis of the evidence presented in the case. Furthermore, the bench expressed strong disapproval of the High Court, which had previously refused to entertain the man's appeal due to a delay of over 3,000 days, effectively remaining a silent observer during his prolonged incarceration.

The Supreme Court characterized the case as a systemic failure and highlighted the difficulties marginalized individuals face when seeking justice within the legal system. By the time the case reached the Supreme Court, the petitioner had already served 22 years in custody.
