Karnataka government bans sale and distribution of tobacco and nicotine products for one year

The Karnataka government has implemented a statewide ban on all gutkha and pan masala products that contain tobacco or nicotine. This directive, issued by the Food Safety and Drugs Administration, prohibits the production, storage, distribution, transport, and sale of these items for a period of one year. The ban extends to products that are packaged separately but designed to be mixed by the consumer, as well as any other products containing tobacco or nicotine. Authorities have stated that the measure is intended to curb health risks associated with the consumption of these substances.

The decision was made under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Officials have clarified that the order focuses on the sale and distribution of these specific products and does not directly impact tobacco farming activities in the state. The government has indicated that enforcement actions, including inspections and potential penalties for non-compliance, will be carried out by food safety officials to ensure the order is strictly followed across the state.
