Maharashtra mandates Marathi language proficiency for commercial vehicle drivers

The Maharashtra state government has introduced a mandate requiring all drivers of commercial passenger vehicles to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Marathi language. This directive applies to auto-rickshaw drivers, taxi operators, and those working for cab aggregators. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the government is amending the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to formalize this requirement. The policy is scheduled to take effect on August 15, with officials planning to conduct verification drives to ensure compliance.

Under the proposed amendments, drivers who fail to meet the language proficiency standard face potential disciplinary action. Consequences for non-compliance include the suspension of driving licences and the possible revocation of vehicle permits. The state government maintains that the policy is intended to improve communication between drivers and passengers and to enhance overall passenger safety. The rule extends to individuals who hold route permits for these commercial vehicles.
