Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution against FCRA Amendment Bill

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday calling for the withdrawal of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. School Education Minister Rajmohan introduced the motion, which requests that the Union Government abandon the bill in its current form and engage in comprehensive consultations with all relevant stakeholders. The assembly proceedings highlighted concerns over provisions related to the expiration, renewal, and cancellation of FCRA registrations, as well as the potential transfer or sale of assets belonging to non-profit organizations.

The resolution argues that the proposed amendments could undermine the autonomy of charitable organizations and negatively affect the operations of minority-run educational and social welfare institutions. Supporters of the resolution emphasized the need to protect social justice, property rights, and the principles of the federal system. While the motion received broad support across the assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party opposed the measure.
