Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution against Lok Sabha seat delimitation

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay moved a special resolution in the state Assembly on Wednesday to oppose the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. The resolution demands that the total strength of the Lok Sabha remain fixed at 543 and that the current distribution of seats among states and union territories be preserved. The motion was passed following a debate in the House, with support from the DMK and Congress, while the AIADMK, BJP, PMK, and DMDK opposed the measure.

Proponents of the resolution argued that delimitation based on recent population data would reduce the parliamentary representation of southern states that have effectively managed population growth. The resolution also advocates for the implementation of a 33 percent quota for women in the legislature, insisting that this reservation should be applied to the current 543-seat structure without further delay. This legislative action follows a consultative meeting held by the Chief Minister with state parliamentarians on August 8 to discuss the potential impact of the delimitation process.
