Assam flood death toll reaches 97 as over 1.68 lakh people remain affected

The flood crisis in Assam has resulted in 97 deaths as of Friday, with the most recent fatalities reported in the Golaghat and Udalguri districts. Over 1.68 lakh people across 15 districts, including Sivasagar, Nagaon, and Jorhat, remain impacted by the ongoing monsoon deluge. Authorities have established relief camps to provide shelter and essential supplies to those displaced by the rising waters, which have submerged 481 villages and caused significant damage to agricultural land.

State officials and central government representatives have visited the affected regions to assess the scale of the disaster. While railway services in Sivasagar have been restored after a two-week disruption, the state remains on alert due to forecasts of heavy rainfall in neighbouring regions. The Jharkhand government has pledged financial assistance to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to support recovery efforts as the state continues to manage the impact of the flooding.
