Upa Lokayukta initiates probe into illegal commercial activities in Hampi

Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa has taken suo motu cognisance of alleged regulatory violations at the Hampi World Heritage Site. The investigation focuses on the presence of unauthorised commercial activities and homestays operating within the site's core, buffer, and peripheral zones. Justice Veerappa has issued notices to various officials in Vijayanagara and Koppal districts, including those from the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority, demanding an explanation for the alleged failure to enforce heritage protection guidelines.

The inquiry stems from reports that local authorities permitted commercial operations in areas where such activities are strictly prohibited. The Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority is tasked with maintaining the integrity of the site, which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage location. The outcome of the notices issued to the concerned officials will determine the next steps in addressing the alleged administrative negligence and the status of the unauthorised establishments.
